After playing for The Master’s University men’s volleyball team throughout the fall of 2024, Zach Mayer joined the coaching staff for the Mustangs’ historic 2025 season.

In his first season as assistant coach, the Mustangs were a perfect 27-0 on the year—winning the 2025 NAIA National Championship, the GSAC tournament, and the GSAC regular season title. The team had six players named to the All-Conference team and five players who earned All-American honors, including Braden Van Groningen who was named the AVCA Player of the Year along with Max McCullough who earned AVCA Newcomer of the Year. The Mustangs were ranked No. 1 in the national poll for the entirety of the season and also finished the year as a top-10 team in the Massey ratings across all divisions of collegiate men’s volleyball.

Other than an undefeated national championship title, the Mustangs’ 2025 season was highlighted by a massive upset win against top-ten ranked NCAA Division I opponent Stanford on the road. The Mustangs proved a perfect 5-0 against NCAA Division I opponents—all from the MPSF conference. All in all, the Mustangs were 81-13 in sets played and went 12-1 in sets during the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

In 2025, Mayer was a finalist for the AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year award. Before beginning his coaching career with the Mustangs, Mayer graduated from Indiana University with a double major in Business Management and Law & Ethics. During his time at Indiana, Mayer found his passion for the sport of volleyball while working closely with the Indiana University women’s volleyball team as a practice player. Furthermore, he served as the Vice President of the Indiana Men’s Club Volleyball program where he led his Hoosier team to a top-10 finish at NCVF Nationals in 2022, a MIVA Championship appearance in 2024, and was named First Team All-Big Ten in his senior season.

In high school, Mayer appeared in three consecutive IBVCA State Championships as a player for Roncalli High School. More recently, Mayer directed the volleyball program at Camp Cobbossee during the summers of 2023 and 2024—an elite sports summer camp for boys in Monmouth, Maine.

Volleyball runs in the family, as Zach is the brother of JVA All-American libero Andrew Mayer who currently plays at the NCAA Division I level back home in Indiana for the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons.
