Coaching and Athletic Career


  • Broneer enters his first season as an assistant coach for TMU Track & Field in 2022 after an extensive athletic and coaching career up to this point.
  • Has coached at the high school level for the past 45 years, including the past 25 at Canyon HS in Canyon Country.
  • Competed at UCLA and placed 17th at the 1968 Olympic Decathlon Trials.
  • Graduated from UCLA in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, with minors in biology and math, while making the Dean's List.
  • Later received a teaching credential from San Fernando Valley State (now CSUN) in 1973 before also earning a master's degree in computer education from United States International University (USIU) in 1985.
  • In addition to coaching, taught AP Biology, Anatomy, Physiology and Math for 35 years.
  • While at John Burroughs HS in Burbank, he was selected to the "All-Time Top Ten High School Decathlon List" at the 1967 Mt. SAC Decathlon.
  • Inducted into the Burbank City Sports "Walk of Fame" in 2006, having coached many park and recreation youth teams, as well as working for the city as a park supervisor.
  • Worked with Zach and Amie Schroeder on the film, McFarland, USA, as a cross country consultant.
  • Has completed 10 marathons.
  • Lives in Valencia with his wife Jan, who played basketball at UCLA. The couple has two children and seven grandchildren.
