Lady Mustangs escape late against La Sierra

The Master's University women's soccer team waited until late, but Maddy Traylor delivered a goal in the 81st minute gave the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 win over the La Sierra Golden Eagles Thursday afternoon in Riverside, Calif.

The win moves TMU to 8-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in GSAC play. It also completes the season sweep of La Sierra, after the Lady Mustangs won 4-0 at Reese Field on Sept. 11.

Goals were hard to come by in a one-sided match. TMU out-shot La Sierra 24-6 and put 12 on goal, but Golden Eagles goalkeeper Sophia Diaz made 11 saves. Traylor took nine of those shots herself and hit the post twice, once in each half. She also had three more shots saved before finally breaking through.

The Lady Mustangs were the more dangerous team in the first half, taking nine shots, but the game stayed scoreless at the break. After halftime they pushed even harder, firing 15 shots while holding La Sierra to two. Breanna Fajardo and Jane Hato each took four shots, and Fajardo put three of hers on target. Zaria Echemendia, Katie Trinh, Taya Pickup and Kaylee Bates, off the bench, each put a shot on goal as well.

Once the goal came, TMU kept pressing. Pickup, Rachel Snow, Traylor and Fajardo all had looks in the final nine minutes as the Lady Mustangs looked for an insurance goal.

At the other end, Katie Snow earned the shutout with four saves.

TMU held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks, and the fouls were even at six apiece. Fajardo picked up the Lady Mustangs' lone yellow card.

The Lady Mustangs return home Saturday to host Soka University at 1:30 p.m. at Reese Field.
