Mustangs notch home victory over Stanton

The Master's University men's basketball squad picked up another win at home against Stanton University by a score of 83-73 Friday in The MacArthur Center.

The Mustangs were down three starters and had only 10 players dressed to play but still were able to close out the win.

TMU was led by once again by sophomore guard Quincy Phillips who had 20 points and made all of his eight free throw attempts. TMU had a strong night from the charity stripe, making 20 of their 22 free throw attempts at a 90.9% clip.

"Really excited for Quincy," Coach Kelvin Starr said. "He did a great job running the offense not just in a scoring way. We were down a lot of players so that game could have gone either way."

In a game that TMU never trailed, they jumped out to an early advantage, propelled by a balanced attack. Eli Terpsma led the charge with 10 points at halftime but Duke Gipson had 9 points, Rylan Starr had 6 points, and Phillips also had 6 at the end of the first half.

In his Mustang debut, Gipson brought rim protection and an interior presence as he had five rebounds and one block across 20 minutes of action.

"It was great to have Duke back," Coach Starr said. "He's been practicing with us but it's good to get him out on the floor."

TMU led by as many as 15 in the first half and led by 12 at the break off a Gipson and-one in the closing minutes.

However, the Elks narrowed the gap, cutting TMU's lead down to seven points at multiple instances in the second half. But each time, The Master's responded and opened their lead back up to double digits.

With two minutes to go, the Elks had the lead down to nine points but Quincy Phillips made all of his eight free throw attempts and Skyler Scull made a pair of free throws as TMU sealed their tenth win of the season.

Tiago Soares had 12 points and six rebounds and Gipson finished with 11 points.

The Mustangs will go on the road Tuesday to play the Hope International Royals in Fullerton, Calif.
