Box Score The Master's women's volleyball team made it two in a row at the CSM Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Neb. with a 3-set sweep of Ottawa University (KS) Saturday morning.
The Lady Mustangs (6-1), ranked No. 23 in the NAIA Pre-Season Poll, hit .288 in the 25-21, 25-21, 25-13 win.
A scary moment came in the second set when
Kate Wagner, the GSAC Setter of the Week last week, went out with an injury. She is expected to be okay
"It was an unfortunate adversity but it turned into a good showing of maturity and composure despite the circumstances", said TMU Head Coach
McKenna Hafner. "We had to change our whole rotational scheme, but they handled it well."
The injury pushed freshman setter
Cassidy Clark into the spotlight to lead the team.
"Cassidy stepped up big when Kate got hurt," Hafner said. "I liked that she stayed calm and composed in a very very stressful situation, one of the most stressful situations a freshman setter can be put in."
The two teams stayed tight at the beginning of the match. But midway through that opening set, TMU broke it open, going on a 12-4 run to open up a 7-point lead. From there they cruised to the 4-point win.
The Braves opened up the second frame with an 8-4 lead. But once again The Master's found their rhythm in the middle of the set, taking a 16-9 run to reassert themselves. Two kills from Bella Amet and the final kill from
McKenna Brady gave the Lady Mustangs the 2-sets to none advantage.
TMU did not let off the throttle going into the third set, jumping out to a 15-5 lead before closing out the 12-point win.
Kinsley Kollman led the attack with 13 kills, followed by
Macy Gebhards with 10 and both Amet and
McKenna Brady adding nine.
"Bella was hitting negative in the first set but then bounced back in the next two sets to be a difference-maker," Coach Hafner said. "And Mckenna (Brady) was a great offensive tool by the end of the day as well."
The Master's will close out the CSM Labor Day Classic against No. 20 Midland University (NE) at 1 p.m. PT Saturday.
