Caden Starr scored 22 and
Kaleb Lowery had his 11th double-double of the season as No. 5-ranked The Master's 94-70 defeated the OUAZ Spirit Thursday in Surprise, Ariz.
Starr was 8 of 14 from the field, including 6 of 10 from behind the arc, to get his 22 points. Lowery finished with 21 and pulled down 11 rebounds.
As a team the Mustangs (19-3, 7-1) hit 33 of 63 (52%) and 12 of 23 from long range. But despite leading the GSAC in rebounding at better than 41.5 per game, TMU snagged a season-low 28 boards against the Spirit.
"I'm glad we got the win but we didn't defend well and we didn't do a good job off the boards," said Head Coach Kelvin Starr. "But I'm always happy to get a win on the road, and now it's onto the next one."
OUAZ jumped out to a 15-10 start by the 12:11 mark of the first half. But over the next three minutes, The Master's went on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good and never look back. TMU finished out the half ahead 48-38.
That lead bloomed at the start of the second half, growing to 63-44 in the first 5:33 of the period after a 3-pointer from
Deondre Earley. TMU closed out the half on a 20-8 run that included 3-pointers from Starr, Lowery and
Caden DeVries, to get the 24-point win.
Following Starr and Lowery in scoring was
Kendall Moore with 15 and
Jaren Nafarrete with eight.
"Jaren played a really good game tonight on both ends of the floor," Coach Starr said. "He was a really good spark off the bench."
The Master's will next have a battle with one of the top teams in the country as they face No. 10 Arizona Christian Saturday in Glendale, Ariz. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
