Box Score On a hot day in Arizona,
Trent Rickard scored two second-half goals to help lift The Master's men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over the OUAZ Spirit Friday in Surprise, Ariz.
Rickard's goals came 11 minutes apart in the middle of the second half. It was the second goal in as many games for the redshirt freshman, whose season was cut short last year as soon as it began due to injury.
The Mustangs (3-4-1, 3-0-1 GSAC) out-shot the Spirit 23-14, with 11 of those 23 shots on goal. Rickard took eight of those shots, with six on target.
TMU went 2-0 on this first of three road trips to Arizona this fall. The team defeated Arizona Christian 5-2 on Wednesday.
"Really satisfying trip to take six points against two quality opponents," said TMU Head Coach Jim Rickard. "It was really hot and our game plan worked well. I'm obviously thrilled with the win and thrilled for Trent. It's been a long year of recovery with a lot of rough times including three surgeries. Those were two great goals that were very timely and made it hard for OUAZ to muster the needed comeback."
The scoring got started with just 28 seconds remaining in the first half when
Michael Masimango netted his first goal as a Mustang off an assist from
Walker Buck. That sent elation into the visiting team's locker room at the half.
"Michael's first career goal was a real blow to them," said Rickard regarding the spirits of the Spirit.
However, OUAZ answered 5:19 into the second half with Jamaine Turner getting an unassisted goal. But that tie lasted 16 minutes before Rickard the player scored his game-winner.
Julian Graham faced four shots on goal, coming up with three saves, including on a penalty kick at the beginning of the second half.
"We'll use this weekend to recover and focus on two very good opponents (next week) in Benedictine and Park," Rickard said.
The Master's will return home on Thursday when they host Benedictine Mesa on Reese Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
