Lady Mustangs win home opener in volleyball

The Master's women's volleyball team had their home opening match of the season Tuesday night, leaving the home crowd happy after a 3-0 sweep of the Westcliff Warriors.

The Lady Mustangs (6-4) dominated in every facet of the match, getting decisive advantages in kills (32-15), aces (10-3) and blocks (7-1).

"The girls all played great," said TMU Head Coach Annett Davis. "I am very proud of how they played pretty consistent. And I especially love how well our non-starters performed today. They work hard every day in practice and we got to see how it is paying off. Also blessed to have such a huge crowd on opening night, and to be supported like that at TMU is special."

TMU set the tone early in the first set. After a Warriors service ace  made it 5-5, The Master's went on a 10-2 run to break open the match 15-7. After Westcliff got to within six, the Lady Mustangs closed out the set with six straight points to win by 12.

The dominance continued as the second set opened with a 9-1 TMU start, which grew to 17-4 before the Warriors fought their way back to once again get to within six. But once again The Master's closed out the set winning four of the final six points to go up 2-0 in sets.

The final set was all TMU as several runs punctuated the win, including an 11-1 finish to take the third set and the match win.

Ten different Lady Mustangs scored at least one kill in the match, with Ruby Duncan and Kinsley Kollman finishing with a team-high five kills each. Six different players registered blocks, led by Janae Henderson's four, while five different players collect at least one ace. Kate Wagner had three to lead the team.

The Master's will open up conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Prescott, Ariz. to take on Embry-Riddle. The Eagles were chosen by the GSAC coaches as the team most likely to win the conference championship. The Lady Mustangs were tied for second in the pre-season poll with Benedictine-Mesa.
