In the first match of the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Neb., The Master's women's volleyball team defeated No. 16 Indiana University Kokomo in three straight sets Friday.
The Lady Mustangs (4-2) hit below their season average for the match, but held the Cougars to just .071 in the 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 victory. TMU won the kills stat line (36-30) and also dominated with 13 blocks compared to four for IUK.
"Our team showed up locked in and ready to play," said TMU Head Coach Annett Davis. "The best out of system volleyball that I have seen from them. Everyone contributed greatly to this win."
TMU jumped out to an early lead in the first set, only to see IUK come back and tie the set at 12-12. That's when the Lady Mustangs when on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from
Isabella Amet, to take control of the match. The Cougars fought back, getting as close as 23-22, but two kills by
Grace Colburn sealed the 25-23 first set win.
Jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the second set, The Master's rode that cushion, never letting IUK get closer than four points, before taking the 7-point set victory.
A key moment came to TMU in the third set. With IUK leading 20-15 and in control of the momentum, kills by Colburn and
Ruby Duncan helped the Lady Mustangs grab four consecutive points to get to within one. The Cougars snared the next two out of three points to make it 22-20, but two TMU kills and three errors by IUK meant five straight points for The Master's to close out the 3-set win.
Colburn had a game-high 12 kills and added three aces. Duncan followed with 10 kills and Amet tallied eight.
Timberlie Miller had 27 assists,
McKenna Brady led the way with six blocks, and
Sierra Hale had a game-high 14 digs.
Big test later in the afternoon for The Master's as they face No. 2 Northwestern College (IA) at 2 p.m. PT.
