Men's Soccer falls in season opener

8/30/2024 6:43:00 PM

Box Score A first-half goal followed by three second-half goals proved to be the difference as The Master's men's soccer team lost their season opener to the Westcliff Warriors 4-0 Friday in Irvine, Calif.

The Warriors, which landed on the NAIA Pre-Season poll as the No. 15-ranked team before falling out of the top 25 this week, out-shot the Mustangs 14-8.

"The first goal hurt because we were a few minutes from a 0-0 half and a wind aided corner bent in near post," said TMU Head Coach Jim Rickard. "The Second half was two free kicks and a wide-open shot that a good team converts"

All eight of TMU's shots came in the second half, with two of those being on goal. The Warriors had six of their 14 shots on goal, with Westcliff's Jordan Di Lonardo scoring a hat trick.

Both Theo Kudlo and Trent Rickard had two shots each for the Mustangs, with Tyrik Trotman, Tyler Mora, Paul Kopp and Caden Zierenberg each getting off one shot.

"I'm disappointed but two weeks off and playing a very mature team exposed our lack of composure," Rickard said. "We'll have to see what we can change in the next few days before the next game."

The Master's will have their home opener on Thursday when they host the Oregon Tech Owls. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
