Mustangs take first loss in conference

Box Score Two second half goals proved to be the undoing as The Master's men's soccer team lost to the Park-Gilbert Buccaneers 2-1 Thursday night in Mesa, Ariz.

Both teams finished the game with 14 shots apiece, with both teams getting five shots on goal.

TMU had either won or tied the last eight games in a row before Thursday night's loss. The Mustangs are now 6-5-2 overall, 6-1-2 in the GSAC where they sit in first place by three points.

"We battled and played hard," said TMU Head Coach Jim Rickard. "Traveling to Arizona in three of the four past weeks eventually is going to take its toll. We didn't get tired, just mentally not as sharp as normal. But it was a typical crushing soccer loss."

Alexis Garcia got the scoring started in the 26th minute off an assist from Tyler Mora. It was Garcia's fifth goal of the season and Mora's third assist.

Then just 1:50 into the second half, Ther Buccaneers' Albin Sundholm scored to tie the game at 1-1. Nearly 40 minutes later, with just 5:12 to play, Havard Brynie scored the difference maker for Park-Gilbert to hand The Master's their first GSAC defeat of 2024.

"We had a goal called back and they scored with five minutes left on a broken play," Rickard said. "(But) we've done so well this conference season and I'm proud of their play tonight. It's hard to play away and we've done a good job until tonight."

The Master's will take on Benedictine Mesa this Saturday in a game scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Ariz.
