It took nearly 74 minutes before The Master's scored but that one goal was all they needed as the men's team finished off their non-conference schedule with a 1-0 win over Bethesda Saturday on Reese Field.
Tyrik Trotman took a pass from
Giorgio Martino at the corner of the box, moved around a defender and scorched a shot low past the Flames keeper to give the Mustangs their fourth win of the season.
TMU (4-2-2) clearly dominated offensively, especially in the second half. The Master's out shot Bethesda 15-5 in the match, with 11 of those Mustangs shots happening in the second half.
"Definitely in the first half they were packing it in on us, but the second half was more open for us," said TMU Head Coach Jim Rickard. "It wasn't lack of chances. We do have a good number of goals this year, but in the last few games we've been in a little bit of a lull. But super happy for a shutout and obviously happy that we won the game, but disappointed we didn't finish more.
"What I want is quality opportunities," Rickard continued. "So when you're setting somebody up for a shot, I'm not expecting to score it all the time but I'm expecting a good chance. I'm much happier when a ball goes low and is just wide versus a ball that goes over (the crossbar).
Caden Zierenberg led the team with five shots, two of those on goal, with Trotman getting off three shots followed by two each from
Caden Deck and
Kai Terentieff.
Kian Bensend had four shots against him with two stops. It was the third shutout of the season for the senior and the 12
th of his Mustangs career, moving him into a tie for sixth all-time at The Master's.
"He had to come up big a couple of times," Rickard said. "There was one that hit the crossbar, but no matter what, teams are going to get an opportunity. He steps up in those moments we need him. He does a great job."
The Mustangs open GSAC play on Thursday when they host the Life Pacific Warriors. Match is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
"The most important thing is we go into conference with a win and that gives us some confidence moving forward," Rickard said. "Overall, we need to have a short memory because it's about conference now, and technically we are 0-0."
