The Master's may have controlled the pressure and the attack through most of the match, but in the end the University of Antelope Valley's defense proved too strong as the teams tied 0-0 at Reese Field Thursday.
The Mustangs (2-1-2) took 18 shots compared to the Pioneers' eight, but only had seven on goal. Several shots were blocked by defenders before they could get to the goal.
"Definitely in the second half (UAV) packed it in very tight," said Head Coach Jim Rickard on the Pioneers' defense. "So you have to be dynamic. And I thought we were dynamic in the initial movements, but we weren't dynamic in the close, we weren't dynamic with the cross or the finish. We had opportunities to score goals, but we've got to finish them."
Eight shots were taken by TMU in the first half, yet the majority of the half was played in the UAV zone. Same story in the second half, with the Mustangs getting 10 more shots off. The Pioneers defense proved frustrating to the Mustangs' offense.
"We had 12 corner kicks," Rickard said. "So whether it's set pieces or any other play, in tight spaces we are not dynamic enough. We have
Giorgio Martino, Prince,
Caden Zierenberg and
Kai Terentieff who are doing things well individually. But in a game like this, we need them to be doing that with each other, an in-tight combination play."
Martino led the team with four shots (two on goal), with
Matt Picht,
Prince Chingancheke and
Theo Kudlo each getting off three shots.
Kian Bensend picked up his second shutout in goal this season, collecting five saves in the match. The back line of
Caden Deck,
Robert Castro and
Matt Picht proved impenetrable.
"We did defend well and we found people to start an attack," Rickard said. "I think we dealt with everything really well. But what makes your defense even better is scoring goals, and while I'm happy we got a shutout, I'm not happy that we were shutout."
The Master's will hit the road Saturday to play former GSAC rival Westmont, which is now in NCAA Division II. The match has a 3 p.m. scheduled start time.
