Another 5-set thriller goes TMU's way

Box Score It was another five-set thriller for The Master's women's volleyball team.

And once again the Lady Mustangs came out on top.

For the second time Friday and the fourth time already this season, TMU went five sets and won, this time defeating The College of Idaho 25-22, 29-27, 15-25, 16-25, 15-7 on day one of Hope International's Summer Slam in Fullerton, Calif.

The Coyotes from COI received votes in the NAIA Top 25 Pre-Season Poll.

College of Idaho had a better hitting percentage in this match (.145 - .106), more kills (51-50), more aces (16-13), and more blocks (15-8).

But TMU still won the match.

After the first two sets were tight, the Coyotes opened up the third set on a 7-0 run to wrestle the momentum of the match over to their side. That momentum then played a balancing act going into the fifth set with both teams trading shots and getting points.

Then, with the score tied 6-6, a Coyotes service error led to a kill by McKenna Brady that fueled an ace by Isabella Amet, and before you could think of the words "momentum shift", The Master's had rolled off six points in a row to grab a 12-6 lead. TMU closed out that decisive set on a 9-1 run to improve their record to 5-1 on the season.

Faith Tarver and McKenna Brady each had game-high 15 kills in the match. Timberlie Miller tied her career high that she has already set three times this season with 44 assists. Miller also led the team with four service aces and was one of five players posting double-digit digs. Cora Machado proved once again to be the best blocker, rejecting five would-be attacks.

The Lady Mustangs will be back at it in Fullerton Saturday morning at 10 a.m. PT when they play UC Merced. They close out the HIU Summer Slam against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy of St. Louis in a match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

The Master's home opener is Tuesday when they host Cal Lutheran in The MacArthur Center. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
