Women's volleyball starts season with two wins

Two back-to-back matches, 10 exhausting sets. Result?

Two wins for The Master's women's volleyball team to start the 2023 season.

In a tournament hosted by La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif. Thursday, the Lady Mustangs came from behind to knock off Saint Katherine in five sets, followed by another 3-2 victory over Morningside (IA).

In the Saint Katherine match, TMU lost the first two sets (17-25, 24-26) before fighting back to claim the next three (25-23, 25-19, 15-13). TMU hit .201 in the match while USK hit .206.

Ruby Duncan could not have started her season any better as she had a career-high 23 kills on 49 total attacks against the Firebirds. Faith Tarver followed with 12 kills and added three service aces.

Cora Machado led the team with seven blocks and finished the match third on the team with seven kills.

Setter Timberlie Miller finished with 44 assists, but led the team with four service aces. Freshman libero Sierra Hale had a team-high 25 digs in her first collegiate match.

Then after a quick break, The Master's took on the Mustangs of Morningside (IA), dropping two of the first three sets (17-25, 25-12, 23-25) before once again clawing back to snatch victory by winning the final two sets (25-21, 15-12).

The Lady Mustangs hit .186, compared to .144 for Morningside. TMU also out-aced (15-8) and out-blocked (7-3) the other Mustangs.

Tarver led TMU with 15 kills followed by Duncan's 14 and Breanna Brooks' 11. Machado was once again a wall of defense, leading the team in this match with four blocks. Duncan led the team with six aces, while Timberlie Miller collected another four aces while once again totaling 44 assists from her setter position. Hale had another 25-dig match.

The Master's will be back at it on day two of the La Sierra Tournament Friday morning at 10 a.m. PT as they face Antelope Valley, followed by a 2 p.m. match against Aquinas (MI).
