Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Dave Caldwell, Sports Information Director

Lowery's Block Secures No. 2 Seed for Mustangs

It came down to one moment.

With The Master's clinging to a 67-65 lead, Jessup had the ball with 5.3 seconds to play.

The inbound pass went to Myles Corey under the basket, who went up for what appeared to be a game-tying layup.

But he didn't see Kaleb Lowery flying in from the weak side to block the shot with authority and send the crowd into hysterics.

Ball game!

"That was a big time block," said Head Coach Kelvin Starr. "We were pretty good protecting the rim all night, but nothing was better than that block."

The win secures the No. 2 spot in the upcoming GSAC Tournament for The Master's (19-7, 12-5 GSAC), which means an automatic bye to next Friday's semi-finals.

"There was a lot at stake tonight," Starr said. "Second place is a pretty big deal, and I'll give credit to all the guys. They love each other and they really show that, and they make coaching them really easy."

The Mustangs had a seven-point lead at the half that they improved to 11 points with 13:36 to go. But the Warriors started to chip away at that lead more and more, getting to within one with 1:01 to play. Lowery made a free throw to take the score to 67-65, which then setup his defensive heroics at the end.

Lowery finished with a team-high 21 points and 14 rebounds. It was his 11th double-double of the season and the 21st game he has scored in double figures. Victor Ohia Obioha scored 14, getting the first 10 points of the game for the Mustangs before the game was even four minutes old. Jordan Starr finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers.

"Kaleb really showed why he should get strong consideration for Player of the Year," Starr said. "And Victor opened the game up big time for us in the first half. Jordan ran the team very well."

The regular season will come to an end this Saturday on Senior Day at The MacArthur Center. T.J. Lowery, Victor Ohia Obioha, Christian Sweazie and Jordan Starr will be the four seniors honored before the game Saturday against the Menlo Oaks. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
