Five different players scored in double figures as The Master's women's basketball team defeated the Bryan College (TN) Lions 88-60 in the opening game of the Jersey Mike's Thanksgiving Classic in The MacArthur Center.
Belle Hernandez led all scorers in the game with 21 points as the Lady Mustangs (7-0) shot 44% from the field, including 40% from long range.
"Hard fought win," said TMU Head Coach Lisa Zamroz. "We held a great 3-point shooting team to 26 percent. That was the key for us today. First half we catered too much defensively to the arc and gave up uncontested layups, but in the second half we looked much better stopping penetration while holding them to just 4-for-17."
Coming into the game, The Lions had averaged over 40% from the field and over 32% from 3-point range in their first six games. They were held to 18-of-69 (26.1%) from the field and 8-of-30 (26.7%) from behind the 3-point line.
TMU also held the advantage in rebounding (58-44), points in the paint (42-18) and bench scoring (21-9).
In addition to her 21 points, Belle Hernandez pulled down 10 rebounds for the double-double. Her sister Lexi also had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 boards.
Nicole Chuang added 15 points,
Marin Lenz 13 and
Laney Grider 12.
Madeline Cooke had eight points to go with 10 rebounds and three more blocked shots.
The Jersey Mike's Thanksgiving Classic continues on Saturday when The Master's will host the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens in The MacArthur Center starting at 11 a.m. That game will be followed by the Vanguard Lions against the Bryan Lions at approximately 1 p.m. Vanguard defeated Wayland Baptist on Friday 69-56.
