TMU Gets Strong Road Win Over Hawks

With four different Lady Mustangs scoring in double figures, including the fourth double-double of the season from Lexi Hernandez, The Master's University defeated the San Diego Christian Hawks 92-62 Thursday in El Cajon, Calif.

For TMU (12-4, 5-3) it was the complete game they needed. The Lady Mustangs shot 46% from the field, hit seven 3s, and out-rebounded the Hawks 57-35 while scoring over 90 points for the fourth time this season.

"Great road win for us," said Head Coach Lisa Zamroz. "The first quarter started a bit heavy footed, but Kelly (Lotz) came in off the bench and brought the energy we needed. She started the chain reaction to ignite the rest of the team."

In the previous three games TMU struggled in the third quarter, but not against the Hawks Thursday night. The Lady Mustangs had the best quarter of the game coming out of the halftime locker room, scoring 29 points while holding SDC to 15. The defense held the Hawks to 35% from the field, with the one exception of the Hawks' Brianna Humphries who scored 30 of SDC's 62 points.

"We let Humphries get too much in the second half and played a bit rushed," Zamroz said. "Our bench gave us great minutes. Katrina (Gorauskas) made the most of her opportunity with a rebound per minute played."

Gorauskas finished with six rebounds in six minutes.

Ella Brubaker, the conference's leading scorer, led the team with 30 points, hitting 13-of-16 from the field, including 4-for-4 from 3-point range. For the fifth time this season, Brubaker scored 30 or more points in a game.

Lexi Hernandez added 13 points to go with her team-high 13 rebounds, Belle Hernandez also scored 13, and freshman Kelly Lotz came off the bench to score a career-high 10.

With the win, TMU moved into a tie for 4th with William Jessup, half-a-game behind Vanguard and one-and-a-half games behind conference leading Westmont and Hope International.

"Our confidence is growing," said Zamroz. "I like where we're headed."

The win sets up a critical game this Saturday in The MacArthur Center as The Master's will host No. 13 Vanguard. Tip-off is set for 5:30.
