Women's Soccer Sizzles with First Win

There was nothing hotter on a scorching day than The Master's offense as the women's soccer team dominated in a 2-0 win over the University of Antelope Valley Saturday at Reese Field to pick up their first win of the season.

The Mustangs (1-3-1) outshot the Pioneers 25-0 and played the majority of the match in UAV's zone. However, it wasn't until the 73rd minute before Lauren Park scored the first goal of her career to put the Master's on the board.

Sixteen minutes later, Hannah Burke's shot was deflected by the Pioneers' goalkeeper right back to Alyssa Hopewell, who fired a shot into the back of the net. It too was the junior's first goal of her career.

"It was great to see Lauren and Alyssa score their first goals," said Head Coach Curtis Lewis. "Credit the girls to keep pushing, pushing, pushing. Soccer is a funny game. We actually scored on a goalkeeper error. We should have had a lot more goals than we have (this season), but hopefully today showed it will open up for us. We don't care where the goals come from. Just putting the ball into the back of the net is the main thing."

Fifteen different players were able to get shots off. Park had a team-high five shots with Burke tallying three. Ellie Radmilovich, Jordyn Bingaman, Sinclair Francescon and Brandi Meyer each added two shots.

The Mustangs changed their system and had different players in different positions. That changed the look for the team and, as far as Coach Lewis is concerned, means there are even more positives to draw from.

"I thought it was good and helpful to change things up a bit," Lewis said. "Hannah (Burke) is the most dangerous player out there, and to see Brandi's (Meyers) crosses, they were absolutely fantastic. We were creating some quality chances, and coming off that (bad loss) to Keiser, it was great to see this team get a shutout and get the win."

The Mustangs will be back on Reese Field on Monday as they host the Westcliff Warriors at 9 a.m. The Warriors are expected to contend for the Cal Pac conference championship.
