The GSAC season started Thursday in women's soccer for Master's and while it wasn't the win they were hoping for, a tie is the next best thing.
The Mustangs'
Hannah Burke scored her second goal of the season in the 26th minute of the first half that was matched by the Firestorm's Isabelle Cruz in the second half for a 1-1 tie in Glendale, Ariz. Thursday.
"I think that was a winnable game," said Head Coach
Curtis Lewis. "We had some great opportunities, but a huge part of the GSAC is getting points on the road and we are coming away with a point. We wanted more, but we pushed well and created opportunities."
The offenses for both teams were evenly matched with ACU getting the edge in shots (15-11) and shots on goal (7-6). Master's had a huge advantage with seven corner kicks compared to the Firestorm's one.
The Mustangs goal started as one of those corner kicks when
Ellie Radmilovich passed the ball to
Kate Merical, who then got a great cross to Burke when she found the back of the net. The assist was credited to Merical.
"That was fantastic," Lewis said of the goal. "We talked about willing the ball to the back of the net and that happened. Hannah was really dangerous today and Sinclair (Francescon) is really starting to come into her own. So I'm really proud of them."
The Arizona trip concludes on Saturday when Master's takes on the OUAZ Spirit in Surprise, Ariz. Game time is 10 a.m.
