Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dave Caldwell, Sports Information Director

Offense Comes to Life in Second Half for TMU

A lackluster first half exploded into an offensive barrage for Master's men's soccer as six second half goals lifted the Mustangs to a 6-0 win over Bethesda Friday in Santa Clarita.

Six different players for Master's scored, with two of those players, Caden Deck and Silas Chavez, getting their first collegiate goals.

"I'm happy we spread the scoring around and get some good passes and get to play everybody," said Head Coach Jim Rickard. "I was hoping we would really take charge of the game, but we didn't really do that in the first half. I'm still not settled on a line-up so it was nice to see a lot of different things go well in the second half."

Eight shots were taken in the first half, with Master's (2-4-2) getting seven. The second half saw the Mustangs take 14 shots to the Flames three. Coach Rickard waited until the last minutes of the half to deliver his speech.

"I didn't go into until there was about six minutes left in the half and I told them I had to compose myself because I wasn't happy," Rickard said. "I wanted to be calm and give them some instruction, but I was pretty disappointed. The quality of chances we had in the first half was pretty good, but what we did with them was not good. And I felt like we weren't pressuring well in the midfield."

Just 2:45 into the second half, the Mustangs' Kai Terentieff had his shot deflected by Bethesda goalkeeper Felippe Lima Toledo. The ball ended up at Theo Kudlo's feet where he took his shot that found the back of the net for the Mustangs' first score. It was the first goal of the season for the All-GSAC player. That seemed to put a charge into the team that had been missing until then.

Less than four minutes later, Cameron Roberts fed Giorgio Martino for the senior's team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Four minutes later, it was the freshman Caden Deck getting an assist from Mark Spencer for his first career goal. That was followed in the 70th minute by Todd Giesbrecht, who had just subbed onto the pitch seconds before, netting his first of the season off an assist from Silas Chavez.

Six minutes later Paul Kopp deep pass found Aiden Rohde alone and onside along the right half, where he streaked to the goal and popped it past the Flames' Toledo for his second goal of the season.

Finally Silas Chavez collected his first goal of his collegiate career in the 89th minute to finish the scoring.

"I was happy to get to play everybody and I'm really happy for the shutout," Rickard said. "Multiple goals is nice but getting a shutout was really nice."

The Mustangs next play in Arizona as GSAC action begins on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Mustangs will be in Glendale, Ariz. to face Arizona Christian followed by a Saturday match against No. 19 OUAZ in Surprise, Ariz.
