Conference play began in Women's volleyball but it didn't start the way the Lady Mustangs hoped as they lost to Westmont in four sets in Santa Barbara Saturday night.
After taking the first set 25-16, The Master's (4-3 overall, 0-1 GSAC) lost the next three sets 20-25, 23-25, 17-25.
"The match started off great with us playing at a very high level, relentless team ball," Head Coach
Annett Davis said. "We did amazing the first set and we look forward to stringing more sets together like that in the future."
While making only one hitting error and collecting 12 kills in that first dominating set, the Lady Mustangs committed 12 hitting errors in the second set. That brought the Warriors back into the match.
"Westmont came back strong, and our level went down a little," Davis said.
Ruby Duncan lead the team with 13 kills followed by
Faith Tarver's 10 kills and
Cora Machado's career high nine.
Timberlie Miller and
Natalie Collins each provided 18 assists with Machado and
Jessica Swenning leading the team with three blocks each.
"
Faith Tarver was a strong presence offensively as well as defensively. She never gave up," Davis said. "
Cora Machado used her abilities to put the ball away and make some solid blocks for us."
The road journey continues for the Lady Mustangs as they will be in Arizona Friday and Saturday with GSAC matches against OUAZ and Arizona Christian.
