WSOC Tie Ave Maria

Mustangs Draw in Florida After Weather Delay

Box Score Despite getting a charge from a one-hour lightning delay, The Master's women's soccer team was held to a 0-0 draw against the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Florida, Tuesday.

TMU (0-1-1) outshot the Gyrenes 15-4 and controlled the ball a good 70% of the time in AMU's half of the pitch, but could not get the ball into the net.

"You have to be able to score in soccer," said Head Coach Curtis Lewis. "We had some golden opportunities, but we just couldn't get it in the net."

The biggest opportunity for TMU came in the 78th minute when the Mustangs' Shelby Willis was fouled inside the box creating a penalty kick opportunity for Hannah Burke. But the PK sailed over the top of the crossbar to preserve the 0-0 tie.

Seven minutes later Burke had another opportunity, but her shot to the upper corner of the net was knocked away with one hand by Gyrenes all-conference goalkeeper Maddie Samuelson. Burke finished the night with 10 shots, eight of which were on goal.

"Hannah was the most dangerous person on the field, for both teams," Lewis said. "She could have had at least four goals. She is that type of player that can and should score. Once she gets that first goal, the pressure will come off and maybe it will be a little more free-flowing for her."

Another big opportunity for TMU came with 18:15 to play in the first half when Alexandria Dunn was able to get a shot off from 25 yards out that ricocheted off Samuelson right to Hannah Burke in front of the net. But Burke's shot attempt was also blocked by Samuelson to keep the score tied. Samuelson finished with 11 saves in the match.

"We passed and trapped better and we created more opportunities," Lewis said. "I was proud of the girls. They had good spirit. No one will ever doubt us for our effort."

The Gyrenes had their best opportunity of the match with 28:30 to play in the second half when Liz Wolfe was able to get past Mustangs goalkeeper Autumn Jensen and try to get a right foot on the ball. But great defense from Malia Wright thwarted the attempt and Seren Tamayo was able to clear it away from the net.

" We came to Florida to get some memories and play some quality soccer and we are doing that. We connected better and I think we are going in the right direction."

The Florida trip continues for the Mustangs on Thursday as they will play RV St. Thomas in Miami Gardens, Florida. Game time is 3 pm PDT.
