TMU Baseball nearly had the perfect ending to its Senior Day on Wednesday, but had to settle for a doubleheader split with Bethesda University inside Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
Â
Zachary Filos pitched his second-consecutive seven-inning complete game in a 4-1 game one victory, before Bethesda came back to spoil TMU's Senior Day festivities by a 5-4 margin in the second game.
Â
Filos gave up a single run and struck out five, pitching the first five innings without conceding a run. The senior right-hander only needed 72 pitches to complete his outing.
Â
Miles Henderson doubled home two runs in the bottom of the first, scoring what proved to be the winning runs.
Davis Beavers hit a double to right with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring TMU's third run, before Henderson added the Mustangs' fourth with a sacrifice fly.
Â
After Bethesda took a 1-0 first-inning lead in game two,
Joe Terlizzi put Master's ahead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. In a 10-pitch at-bat, Terlizzi fouled off five-straight pitches before connecting on a no-doubt-about-it moonshot to left.
Â
The Lion Angels restored their advantage in the top of the fourth with a two-RBI double, before the Mustangs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
Kobe Katayama's RBI-single tied the game, with
Will Batz then putting Master's back in the lead with a solo shot.
Â
It appeared the senior center fielder's home run would score the winning run and bring a fitting ending to TMU's Senior Day, only for Bethesda to tie the game on a throwing error in the top of the ninth.
Â
The Mustangs then got three-straight runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to load the bases, but Bethesda was able to get out of the jam and send the game to extras.
Â
In the top of the 10th, the visitors scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch. TMU put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom half, but Bethesda induced a fly out and a strike out to claim the victory.
Â
Master's (28-19 overall) returns to Golden State Athletic Conference play on April 22, when the Mustangs begin a four-game series against No. 14 Hope International to conclude the regular season.
