TMU Women's Basketball snaps losing streak with convincing win

Third-ranked TMU Women's Basketball returned to its winning ways on Saturday night, snapping a two-game losing streak with a 77-42 win over visiting San Diego Christian.

"We looked like ourselves again tonight," Master's Head Coach Lisa Zamroz said. "We've been lacking our typical defensive intensity and I think we found our rhythm again."

With TMU holding a 14-13 lead halfway through the opening quarter, Master's closed the period on a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead into the second.

In the second quarter, the Hawks battled back to within four before a 16-4 Mustang run increased TMU's advantage to 17 going into halftime.

Helping Master's pull away at the end of the half was the impact of Giani Wimbish-Gay, who scored a few points and dished out a pair of assists as part of that run.

"Giani kicked the game into high gear with the intensity she brought off the bench," Zamroz said.

The Mustangs showcased their defensive intensity in the third quarter, limiting the Hawks to just six points, as TMU outscored SDCC by nine points in both the third and fourth to win by 35.

Ella Brubaker led Master's with 23 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Stephanie Soares added 15 points, while Wimbish-Gay dished out a team-high four assists. Madeline Cooke paced the Mustangs with seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

"It was great to see Ella bounce back offensively and Cooke cleaned house in the paint," Zamroz said.

With the win, combined with (RV) Hope International's loss to fifth-ranked Westmont, Master's (23-2 overall, 12-2 GSAC) is in a tie for first place atop the Golden State Athletic Conference with Westmont, whom the Mustangs split their two matchups with this season.

TMU next plays against Life Pacific University in San Dimas on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
