Shots weren't falling as much as sixth-ranked TMU Women's Basketball would've liked, but the Mustangs cranked up their defensive pressure to leave Rocklin with a 61-46 victory over William Jessup University on Thursday night.
Â
"We struggled again offensively getting shots to fall," Master's Head Coach
Lisa Zamroz said. "Our defensive intensity throughout the whole game carried us."
Â
TMU limited WJU to single-digit points in two out of four quarters, while holding the Warriors to just 27.0% shooting overall and 20.8% from 3-point range.
Â
Master's managed to score in double figures in each quarter, despite shooting 3-for-17 (17.6%) from behind the arc.
Â
"We outrebounded them by 26 and created the second-chance opportunities we needed," Zamroz said.
Â
TMU held a 56-30 advantage in rebounds, including 16-8 in offensive boards, outscoring the Warriors 13-4 in second-chance points.
Â
Four Mustangs scored double-digit points –
Stephanie Soares (13 points, eight rebounds),
Ella Brubaker (12 points, eight rebounds),
Giani Wimbish-Gay (12 points, five rebounds) and
Allyson Pettit (11 points).
Â
Lexi Hernandez (six points, four assists) set a career-high with 11 rebounds, while
Rebekah Throns recorded eight rebounds and four assists herself.
Â
With some reversion to the mean, Master's should start to see more of their shots fall, beginning with Saturday's regular season finale against Menlo at noon in Atherton.
Â
"We're due for those shots to start falling, hopefully just in time for the postseason to start," Zamroz said.
Â
TMU (25-3 overall, 14-3 GSAC) remain tied-for-second in the Golden State Athletic Conference, one game behind third-ranked Westmont College entering the final day of the regular season.
