TMU Swimming & Diving made a splash on the first day of the Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Championships on Wednesday, setting multiple program records and swimming two national qualifying times.
Â
"The first day went great," Master's Interim Head Coach
Curren Bates said. "Many lifetime bests across the men's and women's teams, plus a national meet qualification by
Ryan Tanis and
Xavier Gutierrez in the 100 free."
Â
Xavier Gutierrez (48.44 s) and
Ryan Tanis (48.55 s) both swam national qualifying times in the men's 100 yard freestyle and were part of a 200 yard medley relay, along with
David Kugler and
Nilton Dos Santos de Oliveira, that placed seventh in a time of 1:40.03.
Â
Then, that same group of four finished sixth in the men's 800 yard freestyle relay, touching the wall in 7:04.51.
Â
"The men placed sixth and seventh in their relays with a drop in the 800 free relay that brings us to 12th nationally and a TMU record," Bates said.
Â
The women's relay teams found similar success in their races.
Â
The TMU women's 200 yard medley relay of
Emma McMurray,
Cassandra O'Connor,
Allyn-Ashley Bennett and
Lezly Plahn placed 12th in a time of 1:53.50.
Â
The quartet then placed 11th in the 800 yard freestyle relay, setting a new TMU record of 8:17.61.
Â
"The women's 800 free relay went a season best and set a TMU record," Bates said. "Our women finished 11th and 12th across both relays in a stacked NCAA DI and DII field."
Â
The PCSC Championships continue Thursday at 9:30 a.m. MST/8:30 a.m. PST in St. George, Utah.
