Despite grabbing an early 1-0 lead, Master's gave up two goals to fall to the No. 15 Westmont Warriors 2-1 Saturday on Reese Field in Santa Clarita.
The Lady Mustangs (2-7-2 overall, 0-2-1 in the GSAC) only had one shot on goal in the first half but it was a good one as freshman
Mary Mobley netted the first goal of her collegiate career off a corner kick from
Ellie Radmilovich in the 14th minute.
Both of Westmont's goals were unassisted with Ande Siegel tying the game with less than four minutes to play in the first half, and then Karly Kingsley netting what would prove to be the game-winner 14 minutes into the second half.
"I thought we played a really good game today against a top level team," Master's Head Coach
Curtis Lewis said. "Mary was able to get her first collegiate goal and become the youngest player to ever score for TMU at 16 years old."
Master's offense turned up a notch in the second half as they were able to get off ten shots compared to the Warriors five, but none of them found the back of the net.
Ellie Radmilovich,
Hannah Burke and
Hannah Cumming were each able to get two shots apiece.
"I was very proud of our girls and the effort they put in today," Lewis said. "We really pushed and I thought we were the better team with better opportunities in the second half. But ultimately, (Westmont) got the goal."
The Warriors entered the match undefeated and are now 7-0-3 with Saturday's win. Lewis knew his team was going to need to play the best soccer of the year to come away with a win.
"We were collective in our approach today and every girl gave us the effort that we asked of them," he said.
Master's will be back home on Thursday as they host the Hope International Royals on Reese Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
