In the Golden State Athletic Conference Game of the Week, eighth-ranked TMU Women's Basketball lived up to the billing in an 89-67 win over visiting Menlo College.
Â
"I'm really proud of how we battled for that one," Master's Head Coach
Lisa Zamroz said. "They are tough inside and we didn't back down or let it alter our attack mentality."
Â
That attack mentality was personified by
Giani Wimbish-Gay in the first quarter, as she showcased her nifty dribbling to get in the paint for a few buckets. She also assisted on a couple baskets, helping the Mustangs develop a nine-point lead going into the second.
Â
Lexi Hernandez was a bright spot for TMU in the second quarter, scoring six of the team's final eight points, as Master's increased its lead to 14 going into halftime.
Â
Ella Brubaker then scored eight of the first 10 Mustang points in the third quarter, finishing two layups off TMU steals. Two free throws and a 3-pointer from
Allyson Pettit helped Master's close the quarter on an 11-1 run to lead by 22 entering the fourth.
Â
Back-to-back triples by
Stephanie Soares from the top of the arc in the fourth quarter pushed the Mustangs' lead to a game-high 23 with 5:18 remaining, before TMU ultimately won by 22.
Â
"I thought everyone stepped up in different ways and played so well," Zamroz said. "We shot nearly 90% from the line for the first time probably all year. Several of those came after finishing tough baskets around the rim. That's something we've struggled with lately, so I'm glad to see the extra effort and focus to finish plays."
Â
Soares' double-double streak ended at 16 games, but her game-high 26 points helped Master's hold a 54-32 advantage in points in the paint. Brubaker (20 points), Pettit (15 points, 3-for-7 3-point range) and Wimbish-Gay (12 points, 6 assists) joined Soares in double figures.
Â
Rebekah Throns led all players with nine rebounds.
Â
With the win, Master's improved to 17-0 on the season to tie the team's second-best start to a season in program history.
Â
TMU will look to break that tie and move one game closer to matching the 2019-20 team's 19-0 start to its season with a noon matchup against William Jessup University on Saturday.
