Mustang big men lead Master's to non-conference win

Gavin DeJong and Kaleb Lowery each scored two baskets as part of an 8-0 TMU run to start its game against Bethesda University on Tuesday night inside The MacArthur Center.

It was a sign of things to come.

DeJong recorded a double-double in the first half alone, as the two Mustang big men combined for 37 points and 22 rebounds in a 90-54 non-conference win.

"Gavin was a monster tonight. He's a gifted athlete," Master's Head Coach Kelvin Starr said. "We defended well and were disciplined defensively. We were better in the second half and took care of business."

After the fast Mustang start, TMU's advantage remained in single digits for much of the first half until the Mustangs closed the period on a 15-2 run to take a 43-24 lead into halftime. DeJong had 12 points and 10 boards going into the break.

Master's began the second half just as it ended the first, opening the second period on a 16-4 run to extend its lead to 31, helped by a pair of Davian Brown 3-pointers.

Bethesda got back to within 22, before the Mustangs ran away with the game late to win by 36.

DeJong finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Lowery recorded 16 points and seven boards. The duo helped Master's dominate with a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint.

DJ Wilson hit three triples, posting 11 points, while Brown was the fourth Mustang in double figures with 10.

Johnny McWilliams (eight points) and LeRoy Thompson (seven points) both provided sparks off the bench.

Master's (14-7 overall) returns to Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a home game against Westmont College at 7:30 p.m.

"Back to practice to get ready for a big game on Saturday," Starr said.
