Mustangs start fast in Opening Day victory

TMU Baseball wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Opening Day, scoring four runs in the first inning as the Mustangs cruised to a 7-0 season opening victory over Providence Christian College on Friday afternoon inside Lou Herwaldt Stadium.

"We played a well-rounded game in every facet," Master's Head Coach Monte Brooks said. "We hit the ball hard. We lost two home runs due to the high winds. We executed early and got on base."

Miles Henderson broke the game open with a bases-clearing double down the right field line to score the first three runs of the game.

Freshman Davis Beavers then plated Henderson with a double of his own to score TMU's fourth run of the first inning inning.

After reaching on a bunt single, Will Batz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0.

Master's tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Evan Banks' fly ball to center field scored Joshua Lee, who led off the inning with a walk.

The Mustangs' final run of the game came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Henderson's RBI-single to center scored Brayden Luft.

Zachary Filos, a transfer from Corban University, dominated on the mound in his Mustang debut, pitching seven shutout innings and striking out five.

"He was down in the zone and threw a lot of strikes," Brooks said. "He had good command of his two-best pitches. He was really aggressive attacking their hitters. It was a really good first outing for him. If he does that all year, we're going to be in good shape."

Ethan Schmidt and JoJo Penberthy pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the Mustangs to close out the victory.

Master's will take on Providence Christian again on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.

"I really like our enthusiasm," Brooks said. "It's a vibrant group of guys."
