Throns' big night paces TMU Women's Basketball over ACU

The stat sheet rarely does justice to Rebekah Throns, an All-Golden State Athletic Conference performer a season ago. Her impact on the game is hard to quantify, but on Thursday night her influence was on full display for all to see.

In a 94-68 GSAC victory over visiting Arizona Christian University, Throns poured in a game-high 19 points, on 7-for-12 shooting and 5-for-9 from behind the arc, to go along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

"What a night for Rebekah Throns," Master's Head Coach Lisa Zamroz said. "She was pouring it in from three. I love to see it from Bekah, who grinds it out, night-in and night-out on all those under-the-radar stats. It's great to see her splash out offensively."

While the senior leadership of Throns carried TMU throughout the night, it was the impact of one of the team's nine freshmen that paid huge dividends early on.

"I thought Ally really carried us in the first half, playing with a lot of energy," Zamroz said of Allyson Pettit. "She was affecting nearly every defensive possession, either getting a touch on the ball or running through a passing lane."

Master's held a 22-16 lead after the first quarter, before Throns erupted for 11 points in the second quarter, helping the Mustangs develop a 16-point halftime advantage.

Stephanie Soares had a near double-double in the first half with eight points and 12 rebounds, before she then bolstered TMU's offense in the third quarter with eight more points. She finished with a double-double of 16 points and 16 boards, while adding four steals and three blocks. Teammate Madeline Cooke tallied four blocks of her own.

"Our bigs took care of business inside," Zamroz said. "Steph and Cooke took turns blocking shots tonight and we controlled the glass from start to finish."

Master's, who dominated the boards 41-24, led by as many as 28 halfway through the fourth quarter before winning by 26.

Ella Brubaker joined Throns and Soares in double figures with her 17 points, with Pettit and Lexi Hernandez (eight points each) nearly missing out.

TMU (21-0 overall, 10-0 GSAC) return to conference play on Saturday with a noon home game against Ottawa University Arizona.
