Mustangs respond in second half but can't overcome large halftime deficit

TMU Men's Basketball fought hard in the second half, but couldn't overcome a significant halftime deficit in a 70-93 road defeat to Vanguard University on Saturday night.

"We really competed poorly in the first half," Master's Head Coach Kelvin Starr said. "You have to be ready to play when the ball goes up. I'm happy with how we responded in the second half. We competed until the end and showed some growth."

After trailing by 23 points at halftime, 25-48, the Mustangs found more of a rhythm in the second half. Ryan Beddeo scored all of his game-high 19 points after the halftime interval.

"Ryan did a great job of getting downhill all night," Starr said.

Davian Brown scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, as he and Beddeo were the only two TMU players to score in double figures.

Caden Starr (nine points, eight rebounds) nearly posted a double-double, while Jordan Starr (eight points, five rebounds) and DJ Wilson (eight points) each hit multiple 3-pointers.

Wilson and Jordan Starr combined for four of TMU's seven made triples, with the Mustangs shooting at a 25.9% clip from behind the arc. Vanguard shot 55% from 3, while holding a 53.6%-to-35.4% overall shooting advantage.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for Master's (12-6 overall, 3-6 GSAC), now losers of three-straight. On Thursday, TMU hosts No. 8 Arizona Christian University at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming OUAZ on Saturday at 2 p.m.
