Strong second quarter propels TMU Women's Basketball on the road

Fourth-ranked TMU Women's Basketball exploded for 31 points in the second quarter on the road at San Diego Christian on Thursday night, propelling the Mustangs to an 83-42 Golden State Athletic Conference victory.

The win improves Master's to 19-0 overall (8-0 GSAC), matching the program's best-ever start to a season.

"We switched to a full court press in the second to get ourselves going," Master's Head Coach Lisa Zamroz said. "It gave us the boost we were looking for."

TMU's first-year head coach felt that boost was needed after she said her team played a flat opening quarter, which saw San Diego Christian lead on three separate occasions.

"Playing on the road is never easy," Zamroz said. "We had a flat first quarter and gave them a lot of opportunities to hit open shots, which they did."

The Mustangs then turned a close contest into a blowout, outscoring the Hawks 31-9 in the second quarter to take a 29-point advantage into halftime. It marked the third time this season that Master's has scored 30-plus points in a single quarter.

"Between the greater intensity defensively and Ella getting hot on the offensive end, we were able to create separation going into the half," Zamroz said.

In the second quarter, Ella Brubaker scored 16 of her game-high 24 points, while Stephanie Soares added 10 of her 18 points.

TMU then scored six more points than SDCC in each of the third and fourth quarters to win by a final margin of 41 points.

For the game, Master's held sizable advantages in points in the paint (44-12) and points off turnovers (28-5).

Giani Wimbish-Gay (13 points) joined Brubaker and Soares in double figures, while Jayla Julmist was perfect from the field, scoring seven points and adding seven rebounds in her 12 minutes of action.

TMU will look to break its program-best start to a season, set in 2019-20, when Master's is set to take on No. 20 Vanguard University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
