Master's bounces back with victory over (RV) Life Pacific

TMU Women's Volleyball came up with its biggest win of the season on Friday night, defeating (RV) Life Pacific on the road in five sets (25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 13-25, 15-10).

"Our girls finally played together as a unit," Master's Head Coach Annett Davis said. "Each person took responsibility for their own jobs and they played with a champion mentality."

That mentality helped the Mustangs bounce back from a couple losses in Arizona last weekend and earn their second conference win of the season.

"This week in practice we started with a clean slate," Davis said. "We tried many different things. Coach Amy Suppes came up with some exciting possibilities for lineups and we picked one and went for it. The girls bought into it and pulled off a great win."

Master's controlled the first set from start to finish, leading by as many as nine, before similarly handling the second set.

After Life Pacific scored the opening point of the second set, TMU responded with a 7-0 run helped by two Emily Scott kills, to take a commanding advantage. The Warriors got no closer than three, as Emily Clark put the home side on the brink with one of her six kills.

However, LPU didn't go down without a fight, storming back to win the next two sets and force a decisive fifth. Life Pacific seemed to have all the momentum going into the final stanza after winning 10 of the final 12 points in the penultimate set, before winning the opening point of the fifth.

The two teams battled back and forth and were tied at 7 apiece before a 4-0 Master's run, aided by a Natalie Collins service ace and an Emilye Grace Williams block, put the Mustangs firmly in control.

After the Warriors got to within two at 12-10 in favor of TMU, two Faith Tarver kills helped Master's win the final three points of the set to clinch the road victory.

Tarver led the Mustangs with 10 kills, while also adding nine digs.

"Faith Tarver hitting .500 as an outside hitter was phenomenal and something we knew she had in her," Davis said.

Collins led the team with 20 assists, with Timberlie Miller also reaching double digits in the category (11). Defensively, Anna Poole led TMU with 11 digs, while Clark had a team-high three blocks.

Master's (6-9 overall, 2-3 GSAC) returns to The MacArthur Center on Saturday for a 6 p.m. conference match against San Diego Christian.
