After recording 28 shots in a scoreless tie against Southern Oregon on Saturday, TMU Women's Soccer emphasized finishing in practice this week. It's safe to say that it paid off on Wednesday.
Â
The Mustangs found themselves back in the win column, defeating visiting University of Antelope Valley, 3-1, on Reese Field.
Â
"I thought the girls moved the ball well today and were successful at keeping a press for the majority of the match," Master's Head Coach
Curtis Lewis said.
Â
TMU got on the board in the 26th minute from an unlikely source in
Lexi Baker, who scored her first goal in a Mustang uniform, from 35 yards out directly from a free kick.
Â
At the beginning of the second half the visiting Pioneers came close to equalizing on just their second shot of the game. UAV found itself in at goal behind the TMU backline, but stand-in goalkeeper
Payton Williams came up with a clutch save to preserve the Mustangs' lead.
Â
Master's kicked back into gear and added two goals in quick succession, in the 55th and 56th minutes, not too long after Antelope Valley nearly tied the match.
Â
Kyndel Borman scored her second goal of the season to double TMU's advantage. The senior forward ran onto a ball over-the-top from
Anay Garcia before firing home to the bottom left corner.
Â
Garcia then turned from provider to scorer just a minute-and-a-half later, after she was taken down in the box and then subsequently converted the ensuing spot kick.
Â
Borman and Garcia are now both tied with reigning GSAC Player of the Week
Elizabeth Radmilovich for the team lead in goals with two.
Â
"In the second half I felt our forwards started combining well and created dangerous opportunities," Lewis said.
Â
UAV got one back in the 74th minute to cut TMU's lead to two. Williams initially saved a one-on-one, but could do nothing about the rebound.
Â
"It was a bummer to give up a goal on such a dominant performance, but having your starting keeper out changes things a bit," Lewis said. "I think Payton did such a wonderful job overall and her willingness to serve the team shows her captain mentality."
Â
The goal conceded was the first that Master's has allowed this season, ending a streak of 363 minutes without giving up a goal to start the 2021 campaign.
Â
From then on, the Mustang back line held firm and ensured that the scoreline remained 3-1. Overall, Master's outshot Antelope Valley 18-5, including 9-3 in shots on goal.
