TMU Women's Soccer could not have asked for a better start to its 2021 season than what it got on Tuesday, with six different players scoring in a 6-0 road win against Park University Gilbert.
Â
"It's a good way to start the season off, with
Ariana Romero and the back line getting a shutout and being able to play a lot of players," Master's Head Coach
Curtis Lewis said. "We moved the ball well in the 104-degree heat."
Â
Despite dominating possession in the first half, the Buccaneers kept the Mustangs from finding the back of the net until the final minute of the opening period.
Alexis Mendoza won a ball off a free kick and sparked a TMU counterattack, eventually spreading the ball out wide right to
Katie Caldwell.
Â
Caldwell passed back to Mendoza to play a checking
Alyssa Hopewell, who turned and brilliantly picked out
Kayla Monick on the left-hand side of the box with a through ball. Monick touched forward and calmly slotted the ball into the side netting to get Master's up and running in the new campaign.
Â
TMU kept that momentum going into the second half, with the team's leading scorer from the past two seasons,
Kyndel Borman, opening her account in 2021. Just a minute after the break, Borman played a lovely one-two combination with
Hannah Burke before beating the far post with a strike from outside the 18-yard box.
Â
Emma Hopkins, who led the team in assists last season, then teed up
Brandi Meyer for her first collegiate goal in the 55th minute. Hopkins beat her defender to the byline and squared a ball across the top of the six-yard box for Meyer to put away.
Â
Less than five minutes later, Burke went from provider to scorer after picking up a loose ball at the top of the box and beating the keeper to make it 4-0.
Jordyn Bingaman then scored her first collegiate goal in the 66th minute after making a diagonal run inside from the left flank and being slipped through the Buccaneer defense by Burke.
Â
Elizabeth Radmilovich completed the scoring in the 73rd minute after receiving a delicately chipped ball over the top by
Anay Garcia.
Â
"What I really liked is how many opportunities we created in many different ways," Lewis said. "I thought we dominated possession and dictated the tempo."
Â
For the game, Master's recorded 38 shots, including 16 on goal, while holding more than 80% of the possession in Lewis' estimation.
