An early goal had 20th-ranked Master's off to a dream start, but three unanswered goals gave Ottawa University Arizona a 3-1 victory in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Thursday in Surprise, Arizona.
Â
"Credit Skelly Kellar and Ottawa for great game planning," Master's head coach
Curtis Lewis said. "Overall, it showed playing back-to-back games and the second one being against a really quality team in Ottawa."
Â
The Mustangs got on the board first just 10 minutes into the game when
Seren Tamayo scored her first-career collegiate goal off an assist from
Emma Hopkins.
Â
However, the tides turned with OUAZ, receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, equalizing just eight minutes later off a penalty kick. The Spirit then took the lead in the 35th minute before adding a third just a few minutes into the second half.
Â
"It was a frustrating situation giving up a soft PK to tie the game and then two headers," Lewis said. "We will work to fix some things, which is good for a young team to have to figure out and move forward."
Â
In the second half, OUAZ' goalkeeper denied shots from
Kate Lawrence and two from
Elizabeth Radmilovich, as the Mustangs were unable to cut into the Spirit lead.
Â
"In the second half we pushed better and created some good opportunities," Lewis said. "Another post today and a great save off of a
Kate Lawrence shot."
Â
Both teams recorded five shots on goal, with OUAZ (3-0-1, 2-0 GSAC) holding a narrow 10-9 advantage in total shots.
Â
The two early front runners in the GSAC East will face off again in Santa Clarita on March 24, but before then Master's (5-3-1, 2-1) will return to conference play on Tuesday at Life Pacific. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the San Dimas Sportsplex.
