Mustang bats stymied by OUAZ

Will Batz hit a leadoff home run, but that was the only run The Master's University baseball team would score in a 7-1 defeat to Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday afternoon.

For the third time in the four-game series, the Mustangs took the lead in the first inning, but the Spirit came back to win in all of those games, including on Saturday.

Master's put multiple runners on base during innings two and three, but were caught trying to stretch a single into a double and attempting to steal third, hurting the Mustangs' chances of adding any more runs.

TMU then went one, two, three during innings four through six, before Byron Smith led off the seventh with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Master's was unable to knock him in.

After another one, two, three top-half in the eighth inning, the Mustangs had runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth after singles from Ryan Bricker and Smith. However, OUAZ once again prevented the visitors from scoring.

Benjamin Johnson got the start on the mound for TMU, pitching four innings and giving up two runs. JoJo Penberthy and Smith each recorded two outs on the mound in relief without allowing a run.

Brock Bell, Joe Terlizzi and Josh Lee were the other Mustangs to record hits on the day.

Master's is scheduled to continue its road trip next weekend when the Mustangs venture up to the Pacific Northwest for a four-game series at Oregon Tech University on March 5 and 6.
