Mustangs overcome flight delays to win on the road

TMU Women's Basketball had its Thursday-morning flight delayed, pushing back the start of its Golden State Athletic Conference match by an hour.

After a condensed warm-up, it took some time for the No. 11 Mustangs to get into a rhythm offensively, but TMU's defense helped Master's push through and come away with a 71-45 GSAC victory.

"We had a much longer day than expected, including three flight delays," Master's Head Coach Lisa Zamroz said. "With a short warm-up, it took us some time in-game to adjust and work through some stiffness. We relied on our defense to get us going early."

After OUAZ scored the opening basket of the game, Master's limited the Spirit to just four points the rest of the quarter on 16.7% shooting. The Mustangs' defense allowed TMU to go on a 10-0 run that helped the visitors gain control of the game.

After leading 13-6 following the first quarter, TMU found its footing offensively, outscoring OUAZ 24-9 to take a 22-point halftime lead.

Master's continued its second-quarter momentum into the third, doubling OUAZ' score in the quarter, 22-11. The Spirit then outscored the Mustangs in the fourth and final stanza, but that was mere consolation as TMU came away with a 26-point victory.

Stephanie Soares (eight blocks) recorded her eighth-straight double-double, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds, both team-highs. Ella Brubaker joined her in double figures with her 10 points.

Giani Wimbish-Gay had a solid all-around game with her nine points, six assists and five steals. The Mustangs also got valuable contributions from Rebekah Throns (eight points, five rebounds) and Madeline Cooke (six points, eight rebounds).

"A lot of different players contributed offensively, which was nice to keep our rotations fresh," Zamroz said.

With the win, Master's improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the GSAC.

"It was definitely one of our sloppier performances, but we are grateful to come out with a road win," Zamroz said.

Master's concludes its Arizona road trip on Saturday with an 11 a.m. PST game at Arizona Christian.
