TMU Women's Volleyball saved its best for last, concluding its 2021 season with an upset of visiting Westmont College inside The MacArthur Center on Saturday night. The Mustangs won the match in four sets by scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-17.
Â
"The girls played their best match of the year tonight," Master's Head Coach
Annett Davis said. "They were firing on all cylinders."
Â
The win brought a fitting end to the Mustang careers of
Emily Scott,
Emilye Grace Williams and
Kasie Spencer, who were honored before the match as part of Senior Night.
Â
"All of our seniors played well tonight," Davis said. "From EG's hitting to Scotty's blocking and Kasie's passing. They went out with a bang."
Â
Master's looked inspired to begin the match, leading the first set by as many as six points at 16-10. Westmont battled back to take a 22-21 lead before TMU earned set point at 24-23 after a Warrior service error.
Â
A Westmont kill and a bad set by Master's then gave the visitors set point, but the Mustangs responded with kills by
Emily Clark,
Faith Tarver and
Ruby Duncan to take the opening set.
Â
TMU looked determined to take a two-set-to-none lead, holding a 9-6 advantage in the second, but Westmont scored 11 of the next 13 points to grab control of the set and even the match at one set apiece.
Â
The Warriors scored the first point of the third set, but that was the only time the Mustangs trailed at any point over the next two sets, as Master's cruised to win the final two sets by identical 25-17 scores and end the season on a high note.
Â
"It was definitely a team effort," Davis said. "The girls really had a thank you performance to God, as they truly displayed some of the great gifts He's given them."
Â
Clark led TMU with 15 kills, while Duncan was right behind with 14. Williams also reached double-digits with 11.
Natalie Collins pitched in 46 assists and 14 digs.
Anna Poole tallied 19 digs, while Scott tacked on six blocks to lead the Mustangs.
Â
"
Emily Clark had some thundering kills and huge blocks," Davis said. "
Natalie Collins had one of her best performances of the year, putting our hitters in great situations."
Â
Master's finishes the season with a 9-19 overall record and 5-13 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
