TMU Soccer gears up for GSAC Semifinals

11/10/2021 4:59:00 PM

The Master's University is the only Golden State Athletic Conference institution with two teams remaining in the GSAC soccer tournaments. The Mustangs' semifinal matchups are set for Thursday, with berths in Saturday's championship games on the line.

TMU Men's Soccer, who finished second in the GSAC regular season to earn a first-round bye as the second seed, will face off with third-seeded Menlo College. The semifinal matchup is set for 11 a.m. in Costa Mesa on the campus of Vanguard University, the top seed and host for the men's tournament.

Master's (8-7-1 overall, 5-3 GSAC) earned the second seed over Menlo (9-7 overall, 5-3 GSAC) via a head-to-head tiebreaker after the Mustangs defeated the Oaks 2-1 on Oct. 30. Menlo held a 1-0 halftime lead before goals from Prince Chingancheke and Aidan Rohde overturned TMU's deficit and helped Master's clinch the second seed with the victory.

The Oaks are coming off a convincing 3-0 first-round victory on Saturday over sixth-seeded Westmont College, whom Master's beat 3-1 on Oct. 16.

TMU Women's Soccer (9-3-4 overall, 5-3 GSAC) advanced to the semifinals after a thrilling penalty kick shootout victory over fifth-seeded William Jessup in the first round.

The fourth-seeded Mustangs will take on the top seed and tournament hosts, No. 16 Westmont College (10-1-3 overall, 6-0-2 GSAC), who earned a first-round bye. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara.

Master's and Westmont played to a 2-1 result in favor of the Warriors on Oct. 16. In that game, Westmont took an early 12th-minute lead before Hannah Cumming scored a late equalizer in the 77th minute. However, the Warriors scored a second goal less than three minutes later to clinch the conference win.

The Mustang men are hoping to make their first GSAC Championship Game appearance since 2014, while the TMU Women hope to make their first-ever appearance in program history.
