Runs were not in short supply Friday in Herwaldt Stadium. The Master's University baseball team posted a season-high in runs to beat William Jessup 16-4 in the day's opener while falling 11-9 in the nightcap.
"It was nice to see us score some runs today," said TMU head coach
Monte Brooks. "(The) first game was our most complete game of the year."
Senior right fielder
Roy Verdejo went 2-4 with four RBI in the opener. His two-run double to right-center field ignited a six-run first inning off Warrior right-hander Marlin Brucato and his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the sixth put the Mustangs up 14-4.
His 18 RBIs ties him for the team lead.
Junior catcher
Byron Smith's two-run homer to left field capped the first frame. It was Smith's third home run of the season and he went 2-for-4 in the first game.
Senior second baseman
Brock Bell went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. His run-scoring double to right-center field in the second inning made it a 7-0 game.
Junior left-hander
Alec Akins (2-2) benefited from the Mustangs' early-game run production, going a season-high eight innings. He allowed six hits and walked two while striking out four.
He retired the Warriors in order four times and sandwiched seven innings of scoreless ball around a four-run third inning.
The nightcap featured a run-scoring famine and feast.
The clubs combined for four runs through the first four frames and 16 over the final three.
Bell's first-inning sacrifice fly gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. It would be their only lead of the game.
Bell, who also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap, hit a solo homer to left field in the fifth inning.
By then, though, the Warriors had scored eight times.
Senior transfer
Kaleyl Anderson's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning bit into a seven-run deficit (10-3) and made a game of it.
Anderson went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Game 2 and the homer was his team-leading fifth of the season.
Anderson's 18 RBIs ties him with Verdejo for the team lead.
Following a Smith run-scoring single in the last half of the seventh and final frame,
Nick Tuttle swatted a two-out, two-run homer to left field to pull the Mustangs within 11-9.
Tuttle had homered in the opener and now has three in his junior season.
The Mustangs (15-10, 6-8 GSAC) complete an eight-game homestand on Saturday when they host William Jessup in another double-header.
The first game at Herwaldt Stadium starts at 11:00 a.m.
