Men's volleyball falls in rematch with No. 5 Menlo

TMU freshman Brandon Botdorf had the best offensive game of his brief college career Friday night.

The Mustang freshman had a season-high 12 kills Friday, one of the bright spots in TMU's 3-0 loss at No. 5 ranked Menlo College. Set scores were 25-17, 25-16 and 25-18.

The Mustangs fell to 3-5 overall and 0-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. They will travel to face UC Merced on Saturday at 3 p.m.

On the defensive side, junior middle blocker Brett Norkus, who was recently named GSAC Defender of the Week, posted a match-high five total blocks. Wyatt Bates had five kills and Ezra Moore totaled 16 assists.

TMU hit just .155 for the match, as opposed to the .469 mark that Menlo produced.

The Mustangs stayed close to the Oaks at the beginning of the first set. Tallara served up an ace for TMU's second point, followed by a kill from Botdorf and a block from Norkus to tie the score, 4-4. But the Mustangs never led and Menlo eventually pulled away.

The second set played out similarly to the first, with Botdorf, Tallara and Norkus all securing kills to keep the Mustangs alive in the beginning. But a series of errors, coupled with a pair of aces from Menlo's Edin Ibrahimovic and Konrad Stoklosinski dashed TMU's chances of a comeback.

Botdorf opened the third and final set with a kill to give TMU its first lead of the entire match. He tried to hold that lead with another kill following a Mustang error to bring the score to 2-1. But just like the second set, multiple errors from TMU paired with two aces from Menlo secured the Oaks victory.

The Mustangs have a quick turnaround in another away game on Saturday as they look to gain their first GSAC victory against UC Merced, a team that defeated TMU in the program's first-ever match.
