Two starts into the 2020 campaign,
Kyle Adkins is throwing like an ace. But then again, so is
Aidan Stout.Â
Â
Adkins struck out 14 batters over seven innings of one-run baseball to lead The Master's University to a 7-1 win over Avila University in the first game of a double-header Friday at Herwaldt Stadium.Â
Â
Stout then struck out eight over five scoreless innings in a 12-1 win over the Eagles to complete the sweep.Â
Neither starting pitcher walked a batter.Â
"Fantastic pitching performances," said TMU head coach
Monte Brooks.
A week after he went 5 1/3 innings in a season-opening victory over Marymount California, Adkins (2-0) outdid himself.
Â
He shut out Avila over the first five frames, retired the side in order three times, and struck out a career-high 14 batters.
Â
He got all the runs he needed in the first inning when a passed ball and a
Brock Bell sacrifice fly staked the Mustangs to a 2-0 lead.
Â
Tyler Van Marter went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and
Roy Verdejo was 2-for-3.
Â
Van Marter cleared the bases with a double in a four-run fifth inning as the Mustangs extended their lead to 7-0.
Â
Freshman
JoJo Penberthy closed out the win with two scoreless innings in his TMU debut.
Â
In the nightcap, Stout (1-0) also struck out a career high. He received immediate support in the bottom of the first inning when
Kaleyl Anderson doubled in a run and junior
Nick Tuttle hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer.
Â
Tuttle's fly ball to left-center field landed between two Eagle outfielders and bounced over their heads. Tuttle sprinted all the way around and slid head first into home plate to beat the relay.
Â
The Mustangs scored two more times in the inning on an error and a
Joel Larsen single.
Â
Larsen went 2-for-2 and
Will Batz was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Â
A two-run single from Batz in the third inning made it an 8-0 game.
Â
Van Marter added two RBIs in the nightcap, giving him five on the day.
The Mustangs swiped 11 bases in the doubleheader with Anderson, Tuttle, Van Marter, Larsen, and
Jeremiah Farris stealing two apiece.
Â
"I like how aggressive we've been on the bases to put ourselves in scoring position," said Brooks.
The Mustangs play another doubleheader Saturday, hosting Corban University (OR). The first game will start at 11:00 a.m.
"The intensity on the field and in the dugout has been a joy to see," said Brooks.
