Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Don Gilmore, Assistant Sports Information Director

TMU men’s basketball falls to Menlo for second straight loss

It had happened only two other times in Kelvin Starr's three-plus years as head coach of The Master's University men's basketball team.

The Mustangs lost two in a row once last year, and once the year before.

The third time came on Saturday afternoon when the Mustangs dropped an 87-76 decision at Menlo.  They had lost to William Jessup on Thursday evening.

"We need to play harder because playing at other people's home is hard," said senior center Tim Soares.

Soares, one of five Mustangs to score in double figures, tallied 12 points and tied for game-high honors with six rebounds.
Senior guard Darryl McDowell-White scored a team-high 15 points and junior guard DJ Wilson came off the bench to toss in 13 more.

Forward Michael Taylor contributed 12 points while sophomore guard Jordan Starr dished out a team-high five assists, chipped in 10 points, and pulled down six rebounds.

Soares' two free throws at the 17:14 mark of the first half gave the Mustangs a 6-5 lead but the Oaks reeled off five straight points and TMU never led again.

The Mustangs drew even at 18-all on a Wilson layup with 10:58 left in the period.  However, the Oaks tore off six consecutive points and led the rest of the way.

Menlo used a 7-1 run to take a 45-37 lead at the half.

The Mustangs trailed by as many as 22 points (75-53) in the second half.

The No. 2 Mustangs fell to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the GSAC, where they trail 11th-ranked Westmont by two games.

The Mustangs will try to slice into that two-game deficit next Saturday evening when they take on the Warriors in Santa Barbara.
