If Thursday's match had been solely based on shots on goal, The Master's University would have won.
Â
Instead, visiting William Jessup made the most of just four shots on goal, putting three of them between the pipes in a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs on Reese Field.
Â
"We had three turnovers in the middle that resulted in three goals and we just couldn't dig out," said TMU head coach
Jim Rickard. "Jessup played well but only had four shots on goal."
Â
Suffering their second consecutive shutout, the Mustangs fell to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Â
The Mustangs put 10 shots on goal, including two in the opening 6:34 of play. However, those were saved by Warrior goalie Robert Sams.
Â
At the other end of the field 50 seconds (7:24) after Mustang
Brayden Campos' shot was saved by Sams, Jessup's Heriberto Trevino put one past TMU keeper
Price Anderson for a 1-0 lead.
Â
That slightest of leads held up for over 24 minutes until Trevino did it again, scoring his second goal at the 31:59 mark of the opening half to double the Warrior advantage.
Â
Sandwiched in between those scores were two more shots on goal by Mustang
Dylan Bielanski, who had three on the afternoon but couldn't improve on his team-high eight goals.
Â
The Mustangs, who had given up only three goals in a game once this season prior to Thursday, allowed a third one in a prolific first half for the Warriors when Paul Anderson beat
Price Anderson with 8:14 left in the half.
Â
"We have some soul-searching to do before the meat of our schedule," said Rickard. "The games don't get any easier and our lack of depth got really challenged today."
Â
The Mustangs will be challenged again on Saturday when they host No. 25 Menlo on Reese Field at 1:30pm.
